![]() “The L5Ps have the best rotating assembly by far to date. However, the guys with deep pockets tend to go with the newest ones. “For drag racing, it’s a little bit less expensive of a sport for the average guy to get into, so I don’t think there’s any one preferred Duramax engine. “For sled pulling, it depends whether you’re doing Street Stock, Work Stock or Modified,” Strube says. Dirty Hooker Diesel competes with Duramax power. The stresses of sled pulling versus drag racing versus street performance are all very different, and certain Duramax engines are better suited for each. What ones get built up depend on the application. When it comes to the different Duramax engines out there these days, there are a few that you see more often than others. Plus, they scream and they sound sick doing it.” Common Duramax Engines You definitely get more rpms out of them. The Duramax seems to make a little bit more power right off the bottom end, and they hold out that power band a little longer. I’ve got several different generations of them. “When it comes to the Duramax, it’s one out of every 30 or 40 guys who are playing around with those things and can successfully make clean, reliable power. It’s awesome how well those engines are designed, but everybody’s doing it. The Cummins is a hard one to contend with because the Cummins is bulletproof. “I stopped doing Fords altogether because I got tired of the same things happening over and over again due to the engine design. As far as the platform goes and the foundation of the Duramax, it’s not the cheapest one to build by any stretch of the imagination, but it has reliability and you’re able to produce the power you want to and do it over and over again. I know the Ford Power Strokes are a V as well, but getting them to stay together is a different story, and nothing against the inline sixes. “The Duramax is definitely my favorite,” Strube says. Rich Strube of Richie’s Diesel Performance has a Duramax making nearly 1,400 hp. We recently caught up with Rich to take a look at why Duramax engines are at the top of his list and are for many others as well. Plus change in body.If you ask Rich Strube of Richie’s Diesel Performance in Hicksville, NY what his favorite diesel engine family is, the quick reply is Duramax. There is 13 years of technology difference. Then gutting the 06, and adapting everything from the 93 to the newer truck. What you re wanting to do will be gutting the cab and engine bay on the 93, including the fuel tank and fuel system. I think with all the money wiring, adapters, and head banging involved it may be far and away easier to build the 93. Trans will need the controller/ harness from the 93. You need EGT and boost gauges to adjust the fuel and boost to keep EGT in specs and no black smoke. Best to adapt the 93 instrument cluster and use the under dash wiring harness from from the 93 into the 06.Īs for turbo and fueling. Doubt if any of the other gauges, cruise, lockup, will work either. I know for sure the tack and speedo wont work. PCM on 06 controls everything on the instruments cruise, lockup ect. As far as the dash goes I am sure a 2006 gasser dash is totally incompatible with older 6.5. It is a lot of work to go from newer gas to older diesel. Goals for the truck are mild to moderate towing, along with loading up the kids for trips to the riding parks and some farm work. Thoughts? does the 4911 pump need the screw turned a 1/4 turn for the hx35? I want to just do a hx35w, and I'm thinking an ebay one should be sufficient. ![]() What needs to be done to get a 6.5 to mount into a gmt800 chassis? engine mount brackets? I live on the gulf coast, heat is a concern.I have the radiator from the 93, should i swap it out? should i try to fit an intercooler in there? my previous builds were done in the midwest and heat was of little concern. I sent an email to P***less wiring to see if they will build me a custom harness for a clean install. I'd like to be able to have all the gauges work, lockup, and cruise and such. I want to be able to use either pcm (not sure whats possible here) to control the 4l80. The plan is to install the 6.5 in place of the 6.0 using the TC from the 6.5 on the existing 4l80. i basically have every piece (i think) of 6.5 related equipment from the 6.5 donor truck. I went and bought a 1993 6.5td with 120k miles and 4l80 2wd. I bought another 6.0 takeout, it gets 8.0 mpg and drinks oil. original 6.0 lost cam and lifters despite being non DOD. ![]() Came out of retirement for one last go with a 6.5. built and swapped several 6.2/6.5s back then. Used to roam here years ago under the name MackManiac.
